Peter Püntener

Peter Püntener is a photographer who has worked on a project that directly focuses on the possessions found with human remains during excavations of mass graves in Bosnia.

These photos capture a sad, lonely poignancy held within these items, and adds a level of individuality setting one set of bones apart from another.

He too, like me, see’s these items as something charged with more individuality and sadness than the human remains themselves.

To facilitate identification, clothing and accessories belonging to the victims are laid out on a mortuary bag containing the remains of the person. Relatives searching for a missing person walk between the rows of bags in the mortuary and try to recognize parts of clothing as a first step toward identification.

It is these fabric remainders of lives that has inspired the impressions within my work. In most cases these small pieces of clothing are all that is left to identify an individual.
