Ziyah Gafic is a Bosnian photographer who photographed items that victims of genocide in Bosnia carried with them on their final journey. He decided to photograph every single item exhumed from the mass graves in order to create a visual archive that survivors could easily browse.
In all their simplicity, these items are the last resort of identity, the last permanent reminder that these people ever existed.
These poignant reminders of these people are in many ways more moving than their actual remains. The cold mortuary table as a background seems to highten the sadness.
